How to Build a DIY Bookshelf Bed
A bookshelf bed is a unique and stylish way to add extra storage space to your bedroom while also creating a cozy reading nook. If you’re handy with tools and have a little bit of time, you can easily build your own bookshelf bed.
Materials and Tools Needed
To build a bookshelf bed, you will need the following materials:
- 2x4s (10)
- 2x6s (4)
- Plywood (1 sheet)
- Wood screws (1 box)
- Wood glue
- Stain or paint (optional)
- Bookshelves (2)
You will also need the following tools:
- Measuring tape
- Safety glasses
Assemble the frame. The frame of the bookshelf bed is made from 2x4s and 2x6s. Start by cutting the 2x4s to the following lengths:
- 4 pieces at 24 inches long
- 4 pieces at 30 inches long
- 4 pieces at 36 inches long
Assemble the headboard. The headboard is made from two 2x4s and one 2×6. Cut the 2x4s to 30 inches long and the 2×6 to 36 inches long. Then, attach the 2x4s to the 2×6 with wood screws.
Assemble the footboard. The footboard is made from two 2x4s and one 2×6. Cut the 2x4s to 30 inches long and the 2×6 to 36 inches long. Then, attach the 2x4s to the 2×6 with wood screws.
Attach the headboard and footboard to the frame. The headboard and footboard are attached to the frame with wood screws. Make sure to pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
Attach the plywood to the frame. The plywood is attached to the frame with wood glue and wood screws. Make sure to use enough glue and screws to create a strong bond.
Sand the bed frame. Sand the bed frame with sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.
Stain or paint the bed frame. If you want to, you can stain or paint the bed frame to match your décor.
Attach the bookshelves. The bookshelves are attached to the bed frame with wood screws. Make sure to pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting.
